Keirran talking about his life as contract vehicle technicianWe sat down with Keirran, one of our contract vehicle technicians, after he recently finished his manufacturer training course as part of our Manufacturer Led Programme (MLP). We asked him about his career so far, what attracted him to the motor trade, and how he’s found his time working as a contract vehicle technician with Autotech Recruit. You can read an interview with him below or alternatively, click on the image to watch the full video!

Autotech Recruit: What made you become a contractor?

Keirran: I got an email from Jake Betts [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][Autotech Recruit consultant] a few months before I started. I spoke with my family and realised I’m going to have a lot more free time, a lot more money and it’ll work around my family more, so in the end, I ended up doing it. To be honest one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life!

How was the transition to contract work?

It was scary at first because you’re going from a full wage, to what you’re going to get week after week. Took about a week, then the second week on you get paid and you realise, it’s not as hard as you thought it would be, it’s a lot easier to do.

How has contracting affected your work-life balance?

I’m doing more hobbies, I’m spending more time outside [of work] with the family and at the same time I’m still doing my work, I’m still getting a wage. It’s a balance I never thought I’d have, work and life. Usually, your work controls your life but now it’s pretty much even.

What’s the best part about being a contract vehicle technician?

You’re not involved in the politics, there are no cliques. You go in and you do the best job you possibly can, you go home, no stress. No worries that you’ve got an engine sitting there that hasn’t been touched for 6 weeks while you do other jobs. You just go in, do the job you’re being told to do, and go home happy and calm.
