Ross sharing his tips about starting as a freelance technicianWant to know what it’s like to work as a freelance technician with Autotech Recruit? Look no further! We caught up with Ross, a contract vehicle technician after he completed his manufacturer training course. He spoke a bit more about his journey to contracting for Autotech Recruit, his advice to anyone considering making the switch from permanent to freelance work, and what he enjoys most about his work.

Watch the video and transcript below.

What’s the best part of your job?

“As a mechanic, I enjoy when a car comes in and it’s not working properly, there’s something wrong with it that the service advisors have no clue about. So then you get really into depth with it, you get to have a look at the car and then that car gets back out working the way it should be working again. It’s just a sense of achievement when you get to see that nice car driving away.

How easy did you find it to register with Autotech Recruit?

“Extremely [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][easy], I think the whole process from start to finish took three days and I was in work on the fourth, so it was pretty quick. I think I held it up a day with some issues on my end but other than that it was effortless, shall I say.

How did you find the transition to contracting?

“Relatively easy, I’d prepared myself and had first-hand experience with one of my friends who referred me, he gave me all of the preparation I needed to go into the freelance world.

Any advice for new contractors?

“Be prepared for anything, it can change from Thursday to Friday. You’ll still be in work but it will change, and it can change Thursday to Friday. Be prepared to be on the move, be prepared to work away, if you’re only committing to working 5 minutes down the road then don’t be expecting work all the time. Most of all – be flexible, weekends are workdays in the motor trade.”
