Why did you become a contractor with Autotech Recruit?

Kyle: I became a contractor with Autotech Recruit because I wanted more flexibility and a better work-life balance. I’d worked with several dealer groups before, and there were always restrictions when it came to taking time off or handling personal matters. Contracting gave me the freedom to take control of my own life, rather than being dictated to by a specific company. And now, as a full-time ATech with Autotech Recruit, I find that I can enjoy the same variety and flexibility while benefiting from the security of permanent employment.

How long have you been a vehicle technician, and how long have you been with Autotech Recruit?

Kyle: I’ve been a qualified vehicle technician for 13 years. I started contracting with Autotech Recruit over nine years ago, and recently I became a full-time ATech. It’s been a fantastic experience all around.

Has it always been plain sailing, or have you faced any challenges as a contractor?

Kyle: It’s been a pretty straightforward and smooth experience overall. The only challenges I’ve faced have been minor things like traffic jams—nothing related to work itself. Even now in my ATech role, the nature of moving between client sites keeps the job interesting while being very manageable.

What’s a normal week like for you as a contract technician or now as an ATech?

Kyle: A typical week for me hasn’t changed massively from when I was a contractor. I still work Monday to Friday most weeks, though there are occasional weekends if clients request it. My routine kicks off with walking the dog before heading to whichever site I’m working at. I do the tasks required, submit my timesheet, and then unwind during my free time. Being an ATech means I still get that variety of working at different sites but with the added support and stability of being a full-time employee.

What do you enjoy most about working with Autotech Recruit?

Kyle: I really enjoy the change of scenery. It’s exciting to work with different vehicles, brands, and teams. The pace of automotive technology is advancing so quickly, and being in this role gives me the chance to see firsthand what different manufacturers are doing and how the industry is evolving. Now as an ATech, I also appreciate the stability and structure that full-time employment provides, while still getting the variety and flexibility that I love.

Going back to your time as a contractor, what were your top three things about freelancing with Autotech Recruit?

Kyle: First, the flexibility to choose when I can take time off is invaluable. Second, the pay is significantly better than in a traditional permanent role. And third, the people—whether it’s the teams I work with on-site or the head office staff, they’re all incredibly supportive and easy to get along with.

How do you relax? Do you have any hobbies?

Kyle: I’ve recently got myself a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, which I love taking out whenever the weather cooperates. I also spend time with my dog and my partner. Now that the concert season is back in full swing, we’ve got a lineup of events to attend, which I’m really excited about.

What would you tell someone thinking about becoming a contractor and joining Autotech Recruit?

Kyle: I’d tell them that it’s definitely a good move. The work is consistent, the pay is better, and there are plenty of opportunities for training and upskilling. If someone is unsure, I’d suggest trying it on a PAYE basis with an umbrella company for a few weeks. If it’s not for them, they can always return to a permanent role. And who knows? Like me, you might even find yourself stepping into a permanent role with Autotech Recruit like I did with the ATech position—combining variety with the support of stable employment.

Have you used any of the free training Autotech Recruit offers? How has it helped you?

Kyle: Yes, I’ve taken advantage of the training courses. I became a qualified MOT tester a few years ago, which I’ve been doing regularly since. I also complete the annual assessment training as required. Additionally, I’ve gained Level 3 EV qualifications and plan to pursue Level 4 training soon. Staying well-trained has been essential for keeping up with the industry’s evolution, and Autotech Recruit has been fantastic in providing those opportunities.
