What prompted you to become a contractor with Autotech Recruit?
Mike: I decided to become a contractor because I’d had enough of the hierarchy in my previous roles. I got tired of being told to stay late or do more tasks before I could leave. Becoming self-employed and working as a contractor with Autotech Recruit was my way of taking control of my career—and it’s been the right choice.
How long have you been a vehicle technician and how long have you been contracting with Autotech Recruit?
Mike: I got into mechanics quite late in life, at the age of 28. After a major road accident, I needed to find work, so I went to a local garage and asked for a job. They started me off as a tyre fitter, and from there, I’ve progressed, learning something new every day. I’ve now been contracting with Autotech Recruit for just over 11 months.
Has it always been plain sailing, or have you faced any challenges as a contractor?
Mike: So far, it’s been plain sailing. Honestly, I really enjoy it—it allows me more free time and fits my lifestyle perfectly.
What’s a normal week like for you as a contract technician?
Mike: A standard week for me is 40 hours, either working as an MOT tester or as a technician. I’ve done both, but I prefer MOT testing these days. I’m at a point in my career where I just want to take things a bit easier, and MOT testing allows me to do that.
What do you enjoy most about contracting?
Mike: One word—freedom. It’s all about the freedom.
How has contracting with Autotech Recruit changed your life? Is it different from other companies you’ve worked for?
Mike: Absolutely—it’s made a big difference. I’m learning new things every day, doing the work I want to do, and I’m no longer dealing with unnecessary hassle. It’s been a fantastic change.
Why did you decide to become an ambassador for Autotech Recruit?
Mike: I wanted to give back because Autotech Recruit has been so good to me. Becoming an ambassador felt like the right thing to do.
What would you tell someone thinking about becoming a contractor with Autotech Recruit?
Mike: Don’t overthink it—just go for it. It will change your life for the better.
How do you balance contracting with your free time? Is it easier compared to being in a permanent role?
Mike: To be honest, it depends. One of my hobbies is flying, which I love, but the British weather hasn’t been very cooperative over the last couple of years. It’s been a bit frustrating because I haven’t had as much time to enjoy it as I’d like. That said, the freedom I have as a contractor still makes managing my time much easier than when I was in a permanent role.
Mike's story is a brilliant example of how contracting can offer a fresh start, personal freedom, and professional growth. Be sure to check out other interviews with our contractors for more inspiring insights!
