What prompted you to become a contractor with Autotech Recruit?
Jake: I became a contractor with Autotech Recruit in 2022. At the time, I’d left a previous job just a week before Christmas of 2021, which is really out of character for me—I usually have my next role lined up before leaving. After doing some research, I saw that Autotech Recruit was offering a great opportunity, and I realised contracting could be the way forward for me. It’s a decision I’m really glad I made.
How long have you been a vehicle technician, and how long have you been contracting with Autotech Recruit?
Jake: I started my career in 2002 as an apprentice for a main dealer. Over the years, I worked my way up, became an MOT tester, and even tried my hand at being an MET technician in a body shop, though that wasn’t the right fit for me. I began contracting with Autotech Recruit in 2022, so it’s now been a couple of years as a contractor.
Has it always been plain sailing, or have you faced any challenges as a contractor?
Jake: Honestly, it’s been pretty smooth sailing. Becoming a contractor was a straightforward process, and Autotech Recruit works really hard to keep things simple. I haven’t faced any major issues, which has been a relief. Autotech Recruit has contracting down to a tee. I’ve always had consistent work, and the contracts have been steady and reliable.
What’s a normal week like for you as a contract technician?
Jake: Contracting feels very similar to being employed, just without the workplace politics. My week isn’t very different from being full-time employed. The main difference is that I’m self-employed and working for myself. Other than that, it’s business as usual - a Monday-to-Friday schedule where I focus on the tasks at hand.
What do you enjoy most about contracting?
Jake: For me, it’s the freedom above all else. Contracting is such a simple lifestyle—you’re never expected to do more than you’re capable of, and you’re not tied down to one place. I get more time to do the things I care about, and I never feel stuck in a job I don’t enjoy. I love having control over my schedule and deciding how much I want to work. Plus, meeting new people and experiencing the variety of work keeps things exciting and fulfilling.
What are the top three things you like about being a contractor?
Jake: Definitely the freedom of being self-employed, the flexibility, and the variety. Those are the three things that really make contracting special for me.
Have you used any of the free training Autotech Recruit offers? How has it helped you?
Jake: I’ve taken as many training courses as I can, including the IMI EV Level 3. Autotech Recruit, through their sister brand Autotech Training, offers great free courses, that help their contractors stay up to date with the latest in the industry. The trainers are brilliant and make learning easy and enjoyable.
What would you tell someone who’s thinking about becoming a contractor and joining Autotech Recruit?
Jake: Don’t hesitate. Don’t overthink it. A lot of people worry about not having consistent work, but I can honestly say that’s never been an issue for me. There’s always work available, and it’s a lifestyle change that only gets better over time.
How has contracting with Autotech Recruit changed your life? How is it different from other companies you’ve worked for?
Jake: Contracting has put me in control of my career. I get to make the decisions about how I work and when I work, without a company micromanaging me. It’s also allowed me to manage my finances better and have the free time that I never had when I was tied to a traditional role. It’s made a huge difference to my work-life balance, and that’s invaluable.
Why did you decide to become an Ambassador for Autotech Recruit?
Jake: I wanted to give something back. I love helping people realise that they are not trapped in their jobs and that they have the power to make positive changes. I only wish I had discovered contracting years ago. I had almost given up on the trade, and if I hadn’t taken the chance with Autotech Recruit, I would have ended up on a completely different path.
Jake’s story is proof of the incredible opportunities contracting can bring, from achieving financial independence to gaining the freedom to focus on what really matters. Don’t miss your chance to learn how Autotech Recruit can transform your career!
