What prompted you to become a contractor with Autotech Recruit?

Michael: For me, it was all about the financial benefits and the flexibility. Contracting gives me the balance I’ve always wanted between work and home life. It just made sense to take the leap.

How long have you been a vehicle technician, and how long have you been contracting with Autotech Recruit?

Michael: I’ve been a vehicle technician for about 22 years now. I joined Autotech Recruit as a contractor 14 months ago, and it’s been a fantastic experience since day one.

Has it always been plain sailing, or have you faced any challenges as a contractor?

Michael: Honestly, I haven’t faced many challenges. Every new environment brings its own unique requirements, so there’s always some adjustment, but nothing that’s been overly difficult. Overall, it’s been very smooth for me.

What’s a normal week like for you as a contract technician?

Michael: A normal week is both exciting and varied. Depending on the assignment, I might be working as an MOT tester, a technician, or even handling EV tech tasks. Each role comes with its own challenges, which keeps things fresh and interesting.

What do you enjoy most about contracting?

Michael: What I love most is being my own boss and having the incredible flexibility that comes with the job. Autotech Recruit works closely with me to ensure my requirements are met alongside theirs, which creates a smooth and supportive working environment.

What are your top three things about being a contractor?

Michael: First, the pay is far better than in a traditional role. Second, the flexibility enables me to maintain a fantastic balance between work, family, and my hobbies. Finally, the job security as a contractor with Autotech Recruit is excellent, which gives me peace of mind.

Why did you decide to become an ambassador for Autotech Recruit?

Michael: I wanted to help new contractors understand what to expect and make their transition into the role easier. Autotech Recruit has been so great to me, so becoming an ambassador felt like the right way to give back.

How do you relax? Do you have any hobbies?

Michael: I’m a keen golfer—though not a very good one, I’ll admit! I also enjoy cycling and spending a bit of time at the gym. It’s all about staying active and having fun.

How do you juggle contracting and your free time? Is it easier than if you were in a permanent role?

Michael: It’s definitely easier as a contractor. With just a small amount of notice, I can take time off whenever I need to, whether it’s for an event or something with my kids. Compared to a permanent role, where you might need to plan six weeks or more in advance, the flexibility of contracting is a game-changer for my social and family life.

What would you tell someone thinking about becoming a contractor and joining Autotech Recruit?

Michael: At first, it can feel a bit scary—it’s a big change, and you might worry about job security. But in my experience, that fear is unwarranted. The longest I’ve been out of work between contracts is 24 hours, and that was due to a mistake on my part! The process is seamless, and the flexibility and rewards are incredible. If you’re considering it, don’t hesitate—it’s a decision you won’t regret.
