For vehicle technician Ben, going contracting was a chance to build a working life on his own terms.

Based in Falkirk, Scotland, Ben had spent nearly a decade in the automotive industry, before joining the Autotech Recruit contractor network in 2021. Contracting has given him greater flexibility, additional earning potential and more control over how he manages his working life.
Like many technicians, Ben first became curious about contracting after seeing it work for someone else. He began to ask questions and learn more about the opportunities available. The combination of flexibility, financial potential and the chance to run his own business quickly caught his attention.
“It sounded appealing financially, but the flexibility was a big thing for me too. You get the best of both worlds. You can be your own boss and run your own company, while still having the reassurance of regular work.”
That balance has been key to making contracting work for Ben.
He currently combines contracting with another role, taking on regular assignments with Autotech Recruit each week. This gives him the freedom to increase his income while fitting work around his family life, including keeping Saturdays free to spend with his children.
Making the Business Side Manageable
Contracting as a limited company means taking responsibility for some additional admin, but Ben believes it does not need to be complicated. Rather than allowing paperwork to build up, he sets aside a small amount of time at the end of each week to deal with any accounting tasks.
“I do everything in bite-sized chunks each week, and it only takes around half an hour. I find that much more manageable than leaving it for three months and then trying to get all the books together.”
It is a simple approach, but an effective one. By creating a routine and staying organised, Ben can focus on his work without the administrative side becoming overwhelming.
Regular Work and Ongoing Support
Of course, flexibility only works when it is supported by access to the right assignments.
Throughout his time with Autotech Recruit, Ben’s Contracts Manager, Stuart Graham, has worked closely with him to provide a regular flow of suitable opportunities.
Ben has embraced each assignment with the same friendly, professional and helpful attitude. His reliability and willingness to support the clients have helped him build an excellent reputation wherever he works.
He has become a valued member of the Autotech Recruit contractor network and a great example of what businesses look for in an automotive contractor: strong technical ability, professionalism and the confidence to adapt to different workshop environments.
Encouraging Others to Consider Contracting
Ben’s positive experience has also encouraged him to help other technicians explore whether contracting could work for them.
Now in his second year as an Autotech Recruit Ambassador, he regularly shares his experience with other automotive professionals and has already recommended several talented technicians to the business.
“I believe in the company’s values and want to spread the word. I think contracting is the future of the trade, and I encourage anyone who I think would be suited to it to give it a go.”
His recommendations have helped other technicians discover a different way of working, while introducing Autotech Recruit to some brilliant new contractors.
Could Contracting Work for You?
Ben’s journey demonstrates that contracting can offer experienced technicians the opportunity to earn more, choose assignments that fit their circumstances and gain greater control over their working lives. It can also work alongside other commitments, allowing contractors to create an arrangement that suits them.
For Ben, taking the first step opened the door to greater flexibility, independence and opportunity. Several years later, he remains a highly valued member of our contractor network, and we look forward to continuing to support him throughout his contracting journey.
