Building a Stronger Career Through Contracting
When you speak to Usmaan, you quickly understand why workshops request him back. With sixteen years of experience behind him, he carries the quiet confidence of a technician who has seen most things, solved most problems, and learned to adapt to almost any environment. Today, he is one of Autotech Recruit’s long‑standing contractors, but his path into contracting wasn’t something he planned.

He describes his journey into contracting simply: “I think it was the other way around – contracting chose me.”
A Move That Changed Everything
Born and raised in Sheffield, he relocated to Birmingham due to personal circumstances and to build a better future for his family. The move was the right decision, but the job search that followed was anything but easy. Despite attending several interviews, none of the permanent roles materialised. At the time, contracting wasn’t something he had considered. That changed when he saw an Autotech Recruit job post online. His wife, who had done contracting work in another industry, encouraged him to call. That one call proved to be a turning point. Within weeks, he went from being jobless to starting his first contract, and over the next four years, he would become one of Autotech Recruit’s most respected and reliable technicians.
A Skillset That Fits Any Workshop
With qualifications in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, Refrigerant Handling, Hybrid and Electric systems, ADAS calibration and MOT classes 3, 4, 5 and 7, Usmaan brings a depth of knowledge that allows him to transition effortlessly between different types of work. He has carried out MOTs and MOT repairs, servicing, fast‑fit work, diagnostics, warranty repairs, recalls and accessory fitting for various manufacturers. He has also coached apprentices and supported general diagnostics across multiple workshops. His approach is practical, steady and focused on getting the job done properly. When asked about his favourite brand to work on, he gives an honest answer: as long as the job is straightforward and the vehicle is easy to work on, he’s happy.
Making an Impact Beyond the Tools
What stands out most, however, is not just his technical expertise but the impact he makes within a workshop’s culture. Usmaan is known for his reliability and work ethic, and he integrates quickly with new teams. He communicates clearly with front‑of‑house staff, sales teams and parts departments, and maintains the professionalism needed to represent a client’s brand effectively. His attitude and adaptability make him a strong fit for busy environments, and he consistently brings an added layer of calm and efficiency wherever he goes. Clients appreciate that he not only supports the day‑to‑day workload but also contributes ideas, advises on best practices and naturally adds value as he works.
The Freedom and Growth Contracting Brings
For Usmaan, contracting has offered something that permanent roles never quite could: flexibility, variety and personal growth. Moving from contract to contract allowed him to meet different teams, learn new systems and explore how various manufacturers operate. He describes contracting as an ongoing opportunity to learn more about himself and develop into a better version of who he was the year before.
Just as importantly, the flexibility has made a genuine difference to his personal life. It has allowed him to spend meaningful time with his family, attend Friday prayers, accompany his wife to medical appointments and take time off when he needs it. This balance is one of the biggest reasons he enjoys contracting – the work supports his life, not the other way around.
A Reflection of What Contracting Can Offer
Usmaan’s story is a reflection of what contracting can offer: stability, new opportunities, confidence and a way to build a career on your own terms. For clients, he represents the kind of contractor they hope to receive – calm, experienced, dependable and ready to integrate seamlessly into their team. For candidates, he shows that contracting isn’t just a short‑term fix; it can be a long‑term path that provides both professional satisfaction and personal freedom.
For Autotech Recruit, Usmaan embodies what makes the contractor network so strong: skilled individuals bringing knowledge, resilience and high standards to workshops across the UK.
