Contractor Case Study: Steven – 40+ Years of Automotive Expertise
With over four decades in the motor trade, Steven brings a rare blend of deep technical knowledge, hands on‑ experience and genuine passion for the industry. His career began in 1984 with BMW, after spending his early teens repairing bicycles in a local cycle shop — the spark that started it all.
A Long‑Standing Partnership With Autotech Recruit
Steven has been contracting with Autotech Recruit for more than 12 years, initially through an umbrella company and later operating as his own limited business from 2014 onwards. Throughout this time, he’s become one of our most trusted and in‑demand contractors, regularly returning to sites by name request.
Breadth of Skills Across the Automotive Sector
Steven’s experience spans an exceptionally wide range of disciplines. His background covers:
- Traditional mechanical engineering
- Motorcycle MOT testing (Classes 1 & 2)
- Vehicle MOT testing (Classes 4, 5 & 7)
- Full vehicle restorations
- Welding, bodywork and paint
- Diagnostic investigation and repair
- Technical leadership within workshops
Before contracting, Steven ran his own shop, workshop and MOT centre for 15 years. Since joining Autotech Group, he has worked across Kwik Fit, Halfords, and multiple dealership networks including Land Rover, BMW, Audi and Volkswagen. He also continues to support motorcycle dealers with MOT testing and repairs.
Steven is currently contracting at an independent garage, where he not only works as a technician but also assists in managing the workshop and its ongoing expansion. He has heavily invested in diagnostic equipment over the years, reflecting his commitment to staying ahead of industry demands. He also completed his Level 3 EV training with Autotech Training in Milton Keynes.
Why Steven Chooses Contracting
For Steven, contracting offers the freedom to work across different brands, environments and technologies. He values the opportunity to learn something new in every placement and enjoys supporting younger technicians coming into the trade.
His Approach to the Job
Steven doesn’t have a favourite car brand to work on – for him, every vehicle presents something unique. What he enjoys most is the connection between technician, car and customer, and the satisfaction of delivering a positive experience.
He believes clients appreciate his versatility, honesty and ability to adapt to whatever the workshop needs. His focus is always on doing the job well and representing the Autotech Recruit brand with professionalism, ensuring continued trust and future bookings for both himself and fellow contractors.
What Motivates Him
Although contracting provides excellent financial rewards, Steven’s motivation is not money – it’s enjoyment. He values being recognised for his expertise, especially by the technicians he supports. Knowing he has helped someone or solved a complex problem is what drives him day-to-day.
