Why Summer Could Be the Best Time to Apply for Your Next Automotive Role

Home > Blog > Why Summer Could Be the Best Time to Apply for Your Next Automotive Role

Every year, it happens

The schools break up, suitcases come out of the loft, and thousands of job seekers tell themselves the same thing: “I’ll start looking properly in September.”

It sounds sensible enough. After all, summer is often seen as a quieter time for recruitment. Fewer jobs are advertised, people are on holiday, and businesses can seem slower to make decisions.

But here’s the thing: while many candidates hit pause, automotive employers don’t.

In fact, the businesses that need technicians, MOT testers, service advisors and workshop professionals still need them throughout the summer. Vehicles don’t stop needing repairs just because it’s August.

And that’s exactly why summer can be one of the smartest times to apply.

Less competition, more visibility

With many candidates choosing to delay their job search until autumn, employers often receive fewer applications during the summer months. That can create a valuable opportunity for those who are actively looking for their next role.

If you’re an experienced technician, MOT tester or automotive professional, your skills are very much in demand. Motor trade vacancies increased by 7% in May 2026, pushing the sector back into the top six UK industries for vacancy rates. The IMI estimates there are around 15,000 automotive vacancies across the UK, while demand for vehicle technicians has risen by 19% year-on-year.

In simple terms: there are many job vacancies advertised this summer, but there may be fewer candidates competing for the same opportunities. That can translate into greater visibility, less competition, and a better chance of standing out to prospective employers.

Get ahead of the September rush

Imagine two candidates.

The first waits until September to update their CV and start applying. By then, they’re competing against everyone else who had the same idea.

The second candidate starts applying now. They get their applications in front of recruiters and hiring managers while inboxes are quieter, interviews are easier to arrange, and vacancies are still open.

Which candidate is more likely to get noticed?

Summer can be a valuable opportunity to get ahead of the crowd rather than joining it.

Your next opportunity could already be waiting

Whether you’re actively looking for a new role or just curious about what’s available, now is a great time to explore your options.

The automotive industry is continuing to recruit, skilled technical talent is in high demand, and employers are keen to speak with the right people.

So, while everyone else is saying, “I’ll start looking after summer,” maybe this is your sign not to wait. Take a look at the latest automotive vacancies today.
