Most MOT testers will experience an MOT Testing Service (MTS) outage at some point, like the one we saw last week. While most testers are familiar with the contingency procedures to follow when the system goes down, there can often be uncertainty about what actions need to be taken once the service is restored.
To help, we’ve put together a quick guide outlining the key steps to take during a contingency event and, just as importantly, what to do when the MOT Testing Service comes back online.

When the MOT Testing Service Is Unavailable
If the DVSA declares a contingency event, MOT testing can continue using the approved contingency testing process.
When the MOT Testing Service is unavailable, a contingency code will be displayed in bold on the MTS sign-in screen. This code must be used for every vehicle tested during the outage.
You may see a message similar to:
“Sorry, the MOT Testing Service is unavailable due to planned maintenance.
You will be able to use the service later.
Any information you were entering may not be saved. When the service is available, you may have to start again.
If you need to carry out an MOT test, follow the MOT contingency test procedures. You will be given the contingency code to enter.”
During the outage, testers should:
- Complete the MOT test as normal.
- Record all details on the appropriate contingency paperwork.
- Use the contingency code provided by the MOT Testing Service.
- Keep clear tester notes and supporting documentation.
- Retain all documentation securely until the test can be entered onto the MOT Testing Service.
It is important to remember that contingency testing is only permitted when official contingency procedures are in place. Local internet or IT failures may require a different process.
When the System Is Back Online
This is often the stage that causes the most confusion.
If a vehicle was logged into the MOT Testing Service (MTS) when the outage occurred and remains logged on when the system is restored, do not simply complete the test through MTS.
Instead, you should:
- Abort the test on the MOT Testing Service.
- Process the test result using the appropriate contingency procedure.
- Ensure all contingency paperwork is completed accurately and retained in line with DVSA requirements.
Following the correct process ensures the vehicle is assigned the correct test date and time and helps maintain accurate MOT records. Simply completing a test that was underway when the outage occurred could result in incorrect information being recorded against the vehicle.
Completing Catch-Up
Catch-up entries should be completed as soon as possible once the MOT Testing Service becomes available again.
As a general rule, testers are responsible for carrying out catch-up entries for their own tests. However, in exceptional circumstances, another tester at the same Vehicle Testing Station (VTS) may complete catch-up on behalf of the original tester.
If entering results on behalf of another tester, select “Other” on the contingency result entry screen and record the following in the Reasons box:
- The original tester’s name
- The original tester’s User ID
Taking these steps will help ensure contingency tests are correctly linked to the original MOT and that your records remain compliant and traceable.
Avoid Common Mistakes
If you experience problems entering a contingency test, such as duplicate records, incorrect dates, or rejected contingency references, do not create a new MOT record as a workaround.
Instead, follow the DVSA support process to resolve the issue correctly.
Why It Matters
Accurate contingency records help maintain the integrity of the MOT scheme and protect both testers and Authorised Examiners. Following the correct process ensures that every MOT has a complete and traceable history, even when unexpected system outages occur.
