Making Tax Digital: Essential Information for Autotech Recruit Sole Trader Contractors

If you contract with Autotech Recruit as a sole trader, there are some important HMRC changes on the horizon that you should be aware of. The government is continuing its rollout of Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD for ITSA) – a shift designed to modernise the UK tax system and reduce errors by requiring businesses to keep and submit records digitally.

For Autotech Recruit contract vehicle technicians and MOT testers operating as sole traders, this may mean changes to how you manage and submit your tax information in the coming years. Here’s a clear breakdown of what’s happening, when it’s happening, and how it may affect you.

MTD for ITSA is HMRC’s plan to replace the traditional annual self-assessment process with digital record‑keeping and quarterly submissions through approved accounting software.

In simple terms, paper records and annual uploads will gradually be replaced with digital record‑keeping and more frequent updates.

This primarily affects sole traders, which includes many of the vehicle technicians and MOT testers who contract through Autotech Recruit.

When does it apply to Autotech Recruit sole traders?

1. You may need accounting software

You’ll be required to keep your income and expense records in MTD‑compatible digital software.

If you already use digital tools, the transition should be smooth.

2. Quarterly updates replace the annual tax return

Instead of one self-assessment each January, you’ll send four digital updates per year, plus a final end‑of‑year declaration.

This helps HMRC get more accurate, real‑time information, but it does mean a little more admin spread across the year.

3. There may be small additional costs

HMRC estimates:

  • £300–£350 one‑off setup/familiarisation cost
  • Around £110 per year for ongoing software use

Contractors already using digital tools may see little or no extra cost.

4. If you’re new to digital bookkeeping, there will be an adjustment period

Many contractors who move from paper or spreadsheets to digital systems often find it easier in the long run, especially when keeping track of expenses during busy contract periods.

5. Exemptions do exist

If someone genuinely cannot use digital tools (due to disability, connectivity issues, etc.), they can apply for an exemption from HMRC.

What should Autotech Recruit contractors do now?

You don’t need to make any immediate changes, but preparation helps. We recommend:

  • Start exploring digital bookkeeping tools

Choose software that is either already MTD‑compatible or will be soon.

  • Speak to your accountant

They can advise what your income level means in relation to the rollout timeline.

  • Keep an eye on updates

We’ll do our best to keep sharing clear, practical guidance, so you feel supported and prepared well in advance of any required changes.

  • Check HMRC’s guidance
