The New MOT Testing Service – Updated List of Issues and Workarounds

This article was originally published on 14 September 2015

On 14 September 2015 Driver and Vehicle Standard Agency (DVSA) published an updated list of known problems for MOT testing stations using the new MOT testing service. They’re all temporary, and are being fixed. Until each issue is permanently resolved, DVSA’s advice for MOT testers is to use workarounds.

We would recommend that all our contractor MOT testers familiarise themselves with the below list of issues and workarounds, which was originally published here.

  • Slot accounts not updating

Issue

Garages are making slot payments and the slots aren’t updating within their account.

Workaround

The issue is being fixed with refunds or missing slots issued to garages as necessary.

If you’ve not done so already, you should contact the MOT testing service desk to make sure you get a refund or your slots updated.

  • Incorrect expiry dates

Issue

MOT certificates are showing an incorrect expiry date for cherished transfer registrations.

Workaround

You or your customer should contact DVSA’s customer service centre on 0300 123 9000 (Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 6pm) which will correct the expiry date and issue an updated replacement certificate in due course.

Please advise customers they won’t lose any of the extra days off their MOT as a result of this issue and the replacement they’ll be receiving will reinstate any of the current lost days.

  • Issue duplicate certificates

Issue 1

You can’t issue a duplicate certificate for tests carried out on the old MOT Comp system between 1 April 2015 and 31 July 2015.

Workaround

You or your customer should fill in a form to send contact and vehicle details to DVSA. The customer will then get a duplicate certificate by email or post.

This service only applies to tests carried out between 1 April 2015 and 31 July 2015. There’s no charge for this service.

Issue 2

The existing rules for issuing duplicate certificates apply and haven’t changed. Currently, only the ‘tester’ role can issue duplicate certificates within the MOT testing service.

Workaround

The ‘site manager’ and ‘admin’ roles will be able to issue duplicate certificates in the near future.

  • Find non-component advisories

Issue

Non-component advisories are missing from the service.

Workaround

Enter a manual advisory until the issue is fixed.

  • See odometer readings

Issue

Historic odometer readings are missing from the service.

Workaround

The issue is being fixed and doesn’t effect the legality of any certificate.

  • Record contingency tests

Issue 1

Following recent MOT testing service performance issues, a higher than normal number of contingency testing results need to be entered (or retro-keyed) into the service.

The original tester isn’t always available to retro-key contingency test results back into the service at the earliest opportunity due to absence, holidays etc.

Workaround

DVSA will temporarily allow another tester to enter a contingency test result on behalf of a fellow tester who works at the same vehicle testing station (VTS).

Any tester entering results on behalf of another tester should choose ‘Other’ on the contingency test result entry screen and record the following in the ‘Reasons’ box:

  • the original tester’s name
  • the original tester’s user ID

This will make sure test results are entered into the service at the earliest opportunity and testers should keep the paperwork at their VTS for a minimum of 3 months.

Until further notice, DVSA won’t take any disciplinary action over this issue.

Issue 2

Contingency tests are recorded in the service as having been carried out at 1am on the day of the test.

Workaround

The issue is being fixed. DVSA won’t take any disciplinary action against authorised examiners (AEs) or nominated testers (NTs) about this.

  • Text size on certificates

Issue

Some users are having problems reading testing certificates because of the size of the printed text.

Workaround

Check your printer settings. These should be set for A4 paper, in black and white. Contact your IT supplier if you have any further problems.
