3 Reasons Why Leaving Your Permanent Role For a Contracting Job Could Be Worth It

Could Contracting Be the Ideal Career Choice For YouThere is a widely believed assumption that temporary and contract jobs should be avoided where possible and that they are just a ‘stepping stone’ to the next permanent role.

However, the tables are turning.

Recent data and statistics show the employment rates of temporary roles are rising and people are more drawn towards the benefits.

Our Managing Director, Gavin White, says:

“A study commissioned by The Association of Accounting Technicians polled 2,000 adults on their work life and found that the average Briton will span across six different roles, across six different companies over their working years – this proves that jobs are no longer for life.”

“Tellingly, workers are advised to only stay in one job role for no longer than three years. So, if it is proving difficult to find roles on a permanent basis that regularly, temping could be the best way to fast track your way to finding the best experience, but also maintaining a steady income. Taking on temporary roles could offer the experience, salary and flexibility that job seekers are looking for, without it looking as if they are searching for a new job every other week.”

When it comes to contracting jobs, here are three reasons why leaving your permanent role could be worth it:

  1. Improving the work-life balance

Life can be hectic in the motoring industry, so taking on a temporary role could help with your work-life balance. Imagine a world where you’d be able to get the perks of a permanent role such as a 48 hour working week, holiday entitlement and statutory sick pay whilst in a contracting role, according to The Rec Guide (REC).

Work-related stress already costs Britain 10.4 million working days per year and the pressure of an increasingly demanding work culture is perhaps the biggest challenge to the mental health of the population. Therefore, work-life balance, or even, work-life effectiveness is even more essential. This is possible within the motor trade industry and is one of the reasons why people are leaving permanent roles for temporary jobs.

Ultimately, being able to select your own contracts helps you achieve a better work-life balance resulting in a less stressful lifestyle.

  1. Higher salaries and extra perks

A job doesn’t solely depend on salary, however, it is a big factor in regards to weighing up the positives and negatives of the position’s potential. So when temporary workers read their rights, depending on their employment status, the urge to apply for a temporary role may become more appealing because your salary could be higher.

Since The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported that the UK employment has fallen by 59,000 to 1.425 million for the first time since the Brexit vote, there are more jobs needing to be filled. There is the possibility that companies are willing to offer more salary-wise, in order to fill certain jobs within their businesses.

  1. Brexit is expected to work in temporary workers’ favour

Since Britain began the Brexit process, workers have been more reluctant to search for new roles. However, the automotive industry is progressing every day which is creating a variety of jobs – and companies need skilled individuals to adapt to the growth. Temporary workers are expected to benefit from Brexit because roles still need filling so, to cope with the increase of workload in places such as garages and MOT stations, freelance technicians and testers are needed more than ever.

The Recruitment and Employment Confederation’s (REC) director of policy, Tom Hadley, believes that the growth of jobs is to continue overall, however, there are now effects of uncertainty in the UK marketplace. Other sectors, such as the NHS, have a shortage of skills and are therefore are becoming heavily dependant on short-term cover in order to fill the gaps when it comes to resourcing.

Gavin concludes:

“When it comes to busting the myth, temporary jobs are more than capable to provide you with the skill, knowledge, salary, flexibility and also drive to succeeding.

“These top three reasons provide evidence and raw data as to why temping is a growing form of employability and how it is adapting to the new era of work – could it be the ideal career choice for you?”
