Land's End to John O'Groats Cycle Challenge – Only 6 Weeks to Go

Cycle Challenge for BENToday we have a special guest blog from Stephen Hughes, Autotech Recruit Operations Director, who is currently on a mission to raise £2,500 for BEN – The Automotive Industry Charity. Next month he is going to cycle over 900 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats, but he needs your generosity to help him achieve this fantastic fundraising goal.

Without further ado…

Six weeks today we will have completed Day One of our ten day cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats. Day One will have seen us cycle to the start (something I’m not impressed with) from our overnight stop in Sennen, then start this 94 miles stage taking in Penzance, Marazion, Leedstown, Penryn, Truro, St Austell, Liskeard and ending up in Tavistock. As you will know that part of the country is truly beautiful with winding country roads which ‘gently’ undulate through gorgeous countryside… if you are in a car!

I’ve been told by some much more experienced cyclist that the first couple of days can be quite tough (so for me that means very tough). With this in mind my training has upped a level and will continue right through until we travel down to Penzance. I’m trying to get out on my bike as often as I can, but this isn’t always as often as I’d like, so sometimes putting the bike on my turbo trainer and cycling for a couple of hours is grabbed between work, rest and play.

Something else which hasn’t progressed as well as I would have hoped is my fundraising for BEN – The Automotive Charity. Maybe the more discerning of you are waiting to see how I actually get on and whether I manage to finish before parting with your hard earned cash. I can understand that, but in this tough six week spell before the excitement of the start, training is getting tougher and longer, so any donations will be much appreciated and greatly encouraging for me to get more and more miles in my legs. Oh, and don’t worry those of you waiting till I get to John O’Groats… I will get there… Please just donate now AND when I get to the finish!

I’m going to post something on my social media each week leading up to the start, then each day… If you’d prefer I didn’t then just donate to stop me. Next post will fill you in on the routes of Days Two and Three. I’ll also give you an update on my training rides. I might even post some of my training rides through Garmin Connect. Again, if you’d prefer I didn’t, then simply donate! Here’s the link to my Just Giving page – www.justgiving.com/Stephen-Hughes.

Bye for now! I’m off next week to my summer training camp over in Suffolk.

Thanks!

Steve
