We were delighted to see so many prospective temporary vehicle technicians and MOT testers turn up at our Contractor Open Evening event at Wyboston Lakes, Bedfordshire.

The event was the second we have held for people who are interested in hearing more about becoming a contractor for Autotech Recruit.

While freelancing was once considered something which only marketing, IT and accounting execs could do, this new way of working is creeping across all industries, in fact, demand for temporary vehicle technicians in the UK, to cover holiday shortages, sickness, and just the skills gap in general, is increasing at such a rate that there simply isn’t enough temporary technicians available to fill the contracts.

We do, however, appreciate that taking the leap into contracting can cause some people, who are used to the security of a permanent position, trepidation. Consequently, the objective of our Contractor Open Evenings is to further educate people who have considered taking this career path.

The relaxed environment of the event enabled prospective contractors to meet our current contractors and management team over food and drink and ask them any questions. Our managing director, Gavin White, presented to the audience, outlining the many benefits of becoming a contractor, from role variety, flexibility and a greater potential to earn, to the possible pitfalls. Gavin also summarised the process of becoming a contractor, introducing the supporting team, and the different roles and training available. This included the opportunity contractors have to participate in our Manufacturer-Led Programme, enabling them to work with leading OEMs including BMW, Ford and Volvo.

“Demand for our services has increased dramatically and we currently have too much work for our current network of contractors to manage – in the last 12 months alone, we filled over 42,000 days of work!” Gavin comments. “We do appreciate that for many, taking the leap into contracting can be daunting, however our Contractor Open Evenings are proving an insightful way of delivering the many benefits, reassuring people that the work is indeed out there, and fully explaining the process to them.

Now we have a strong team of consultants working across the South, North and Central England we are keen to roll out these events to reach each region of the UK.”
